Hey thanks for the info.

There are various 200-400uF caps used as different parts were available at the time of production. I think either 220 or 400uF caps would do, but I think people generally say that 400uF is too much.... But hey, if it's been working up to now, surely it must be ok. I think I used 330uF caps to replace my 400uF caps.

Cheers

Hello
Lots of excellent work on this site!
I have some pictures of a SM100 serial 12706 which I acquired recently, I posted on Vintage Amps about it with some inages. It needed a recap and some new pots (ordered these 220uf based on the schematic) but found 400uF mains caps!! Hope these work out ok - not finished/tested yet. Speakers were one Fane and one yellow celestion, the Celestion is probably correct (1976 MY ?). You are welcome to put this in the data base.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your comment, and glad you liked the review.

However: The noise gate isn't global, it's set per preset. So if you are in one of the 24 effect presets, and you enable the noise gate and set a threshold and decay setting, if you than go to another preset, you'll notice the noise gate isn't keeing those settings. It sets the noise gate just for that single preset, so that you can have a gate on for only the presets you want it.

My comment was saying 'wouldn't it be nice if you need the noise gate for all 24 presets, to be able to turn on an extra setting meaning that when you set the noise gate once, it applies that setting to all presets'

Cheers

Good review - based on this I purchased on of these guys yesterday to complete my pedal board. After selling my TC Electronics G-Force a few months back, I needed one good multitool, something that would be good for those one-off effects that are only used sparingly.

FYI, there IS a global noise gate. Found it while fooling around in the main/global setup - you have to access the second page of the setup (by pushing in on the model select button). There you can set a global gate level and decay. Pretty cool/useful feature.

Yeah, I'm not a regular here, nor do I own a Tech 21 Power Engine. I've heard people get the most success running it in Studio/Direct output mode hooked up via XLR. Keep in mind there are two models - the older one used a 2112A speaker or something like that which I believe had a larger frequency response than the Celestion 70/80 they use now. I'd also try it in combo power amp mode with a full amp model and a cab selected. using "no cab" might be a bit harsh, but it's also viable if you EQ your patches to compensate.

Well we know some of the mods that were made, but how the amp will look, and whether it'll be called the JVM410JS or not are still unknown.

I think based on previous Satch amps, it will be a production model rather than limited edition, but that's just my opinion. It could be a limited run...

Price-wise, that's a hard call. signature amps are usually a bit more expensive, BUT compare Slash's AFD100 to the JCM800 reissue... similar price. the YJM100 was a lot at £1515, but it's a more limited run than the Slash head, and it's a Plexi with a lot of extras. the reissue 1959SLP is £1330 and is a stock plexi... I think the extras teh YJM100 has, are worth the £200, and that's aside from it being limited edition.

So with the JVM410H being around £1100, if the Satch head is a production model I would gues it'll be £1250ish to start, and then maybe after 6 months it'll come down by £100
Basically as it's mostly got tonal tweaks, but not that many additional features... i.e. the reverb's gone, and replaced by the noise gate that's copied from the Kerry King signature... So parts wise it's not going to cost much different to produce than a stock JVM410H I don't think.
If it's a limited edition, then depending on how limited run it is will add more cost... But seen as so many people try to copy Satch's tone, and so many JVM users seem to want some of the tweaks he's made (like a choke and noise gate) I think it would be a wise choice to make this amp non limited production, even if it's only produced for a year, without the limit I'm sure they'll sell a lot of them.

I have been trying to find out the cost though... I will post here once I know.

I can't say I wasn't a little annoyed that the Satch head wasn't released at NAMM... BUT Marshall never officially said it would be. Satch did a couple of times mention it, but I would guess he probably wasn't up to speed on the actual production of the amp... Many things can (and often do) slow things down when you're manufacturing a product for the first time.

Check out Chris George on Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/chrisgeorgeband He's the official Marshall demonstrator, and he aparently played the final version of the Satch head yesterday... Note he didn't say prototype (which he does mention when talking about other amps he's testing), so I think he may be talking about an actual production model...

I'm guessing we will see the Satch Marshal head released at Musikmesse at the end of March... So not too long to wait now :-)

Ok . . . I have had some more time for experimenting and tweaking. The negative feedback thing is still pending; however, I did change the output tube to a 6V6 and the sonic character of the amp is much different. "Much more the way I like it." Also, I have been tweaking the tone stack a bit. Looking for a smoother tone than the stock parts . . . at least with a strat. I used 250p, .1umd, and .047mfd. This gave it more original fender tone. I'm digging it so far. The only mistake I made was using the same hole that the 6BQ5 was in to mount the 6V6. I would not do this again because the wiring makes removing the board to solder a big pain in the ass. Everything else is great so far. I have been testing the amp with several types of speakers . . . the green back wins again!
